Books Create a Foundation of Trust

by | Feb 11, 2025

Lead to Read KC partners with the Kansas City Police Department to place Reading Is Everywhere books with their Social Services Section. Supervisor Tamara McIntosh manages a team of six Social Services Specialists, one at each Patrol Station.

“We serve alongside police officers to connect families to resources,” says McIntosh. “A simple book can ease tension, spark conversation, and show kids that our department is there to help.”

KCPD was the first police department in the country to embed social workers with officers. From riding along on calls, or meeting with families who come to the stations, the specialists are able to provide support and assistance. Many times, when a child is present, a few childrens’ books can help entertain while a parent is being interviewed.

The books from Lead to Read KC are a calming influence,” adds Tiffany Sanders, Social Services Specialist. “If we’re able to distract a kid by reading with them, they are more likely to see our visit as a good thing. Plus, they get to keep the books!”

The Reading Is Everywhere program not only encourages children to read outside of school, it helps families build a home library. Lead to Read KC replenishes the Patrol Stations with new titles each month.

“A book can offer comfort, hope, and a chance to escape into a story,” says Linda Hughes, Lead to Read KC’s Community Outreach Manager. “We’re happy to hear the books build trust and create positive connections with children.”
