There are moments when you can feel a city come together.
Our Reading Rally was one of those moments.
More than 3,000 students filled the T-Mobile Center, not for a game, but for something just as powerful: reading. The energy was electric. Students cheering, books in hand, surrounded by a community that believes in them. Seeing that many young people celebrated for reading is something you don’t soon forget.
And when Patrick Mahomes took the stage, it wasn’t just exciting, it was meaningful. Patrick sent a clear message to every student in that room: Reading matters. You matter.
But what makes the Reading Rally so special isn’t just the scale. It’s what it represents. Every one of those students got there because of consistent, caring adults showing up week after week. Reading mentors. Volunteers. A community that refuses to look away from the literacy crisis in our city.
That’s Kansas City at its best.
And now, we carry that energy forward.
On April 30, we’ll gather again, this time with local leaders for KC Reads: Sports Edition!, presented by Hallmark. If the Reading Rally is about celebrating our students, the breakfast is about asking a bigger question: What will it take for Kansas City to keep winning in every arena?
We know the answer starts with literacy.
This year’s breakfast will bring together leaders from across Kansas City’s sports community, alongside corporate and civic partners, to talk about what it takes to build strong teams, strong systems, and a strong city. Because the truth is, championships don’t just happen on the field. They’re built in classrooms, in communities, and in moments where someone chooses to invest in a child.
From the energy of the Reading Rally to the conversations ahead at KC Reads: Sports Edition!, this is how momentum turns into meaningful change. It’s how a city moves from showing up for a moment to showing up for the future, together.
