Increasing literacy rates in Northeast schools
In a James Elementary first grade classroom, students are paired off with adults, quietly reading or working on sight words. Their mentors are volunteers with Lead to Read KC, an organization working to increase the literacy rates in young students.
Lead to Read KC Partners With Local Businesses to Build Foundation for STEM Careers
Lead to Read KC is working to help build Kansas City’s future workforce through a one-day volunteer opportunity targeted at local businesses.
During the one-hour visit, each volunteer is paired with a student to read Someone Builds the Dream by Lisa Wheeler, a children’s book that explores a variety of STEM careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The book also highlights many construction jobs that are essential to our community. At the end of the session, each child receives a copy of the book to take home.
Patrick Mahomes Teams Up With KC’s Largest Volunteer Literacy Program
Patrick Mahomes is teaming up with the city’s largest volunteer literacy program. The quarterback’s 15 and the Mahomies Foundation is challenging kids to read alongside Lead to Read KC.
An event hosted by the organizations today had all the makings of a pep rally at Brookside Charter School. Instead of talking football though, this event is about scoring points with books. The reading challenge got kicked off with a pre-recorded PSA from the quarterback to the young readers.
Lead to Read KC Is One of 15 Organizations Receiving a Grant From the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation
It was announced today that the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation will provide $250,000 in the form of 15 grants to 15 charitable organizations from the Greater Kansas City area through its signature program, 15 for 15. This annual program supports 15 youth initiatives that focus on education, the arts, athletics, children with disabilities, after-school programs, social justice and more.
